Film Review: Por Thozhil

Por Thozhil starring Ashok Selvan, Sarath Kumar and Nikhila Vimal hits screens on June 9th, directed by debutant Vignesh Raja.

The cop thriller revolves around 2 cops, very different from each other in both age and experience, who are thrown together to solve a series of killings.

Prakash (Ashok Selvan), a rookie cop, a gold medallist who goes by the book,  reading up on crime solving methods, has to intern with a senior eccentric but experienced crime branch officer, Loganathan ( Sarath Kumar) and travel to Trichy to solve a series of killings. Veena ( Nikhila Vimal) is a techie cop who accompanies them in this special mission.

What happens when the two men, poles apart in temperament and experience, work together? Are they at loggerheads? What are they up against? Are they able to resolve their differences and solve the crimes?

Vignesh Raja has delivered a superb thriller, with several high points, thrills and chills that keep you guessing and hooked till the end.   The director's eye for detailing is to be commended. He keeps the suspense on going till the very end.

There are some logic related questions which pop up at times,  but the overall feeling is that of watching a good suspense thriller.

But the highlight of the film is the way  relationships are shown, be it within families, between  parents, kids, spouses and also within colleagues. There is an underlying message all tbrough, highlighted tenderly at the end. The, relationship between mentor  Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan is uniquely portrayed and by far among the duo's best performances. Their reactions speak louder than words and convey a gamut of emotions from humor, empathy  and pathos  to growing respect. The duo are a delight to watch whenever they enter the screen.

Sarath Kumar has delivered a finely nuanced, restrained performance as the brooding cop, making you wish to see more of the actor on screen while for Ashok Selvan this is easily among his career best which showcases different facets of his acting prowess.

Niklhila Vimal lights up the screen with her subtle yet impactful performance.

The supporting cast too is well chosen as are the locations  and settungs which take on a character of their own.

A crisp and taut thriller with exemplary performances, suspense, emotions and a social message, Por Thozhil makes for a good watch for fans of the genre.
