 Siva, a young  orphan schoolboy living with his grandmother is friends with his classmate Madhi, girl from a well to do family.  Their teenage affection is opposed strongly by Madhi's grandmother who is a staunch casteist.  But the kids continue to be friends. A parallel story is about a pair of lovers. The father of the upper caste boy is a vengeful , ruthless man who poisons his own son and wreaks havoc on his lover, so that the duo never marry.
