Movie Review #Singaramm
A group of a nomadic narikkuravar community led by Ramlingam ( MS Bhaskar) along with his son Singaramm (Yogi Babu) come to a village where they are given shelter by a much respected good samaritan, ex MP ( Vela Ramamurthy).
But this move unsettles the local factions of 2 political parties, leading to many problems for Singaramm and his people who are not only disrespected but also assaulted by a goon (Sendrayan).
But things change when Singaramm wins a lottery of 1.5 crores. Everyone who looked down on the community, now welcomes them. But when Singaramm gets an opportunity to run for elections, in a bid to do good for the society, the political goons try to run them out of town.
What happens to Singaramm and his people? Does he win the election and fulfil his aim?
Yogi Babu shines in a serious, measured performance, different from his usual comedic self. Be it depicting his emotions for his father, or playing the innocent, good-hearted but ill treated man, or the way he takes charge while running for elections. Yogi Babu superbly takes charge of a movie with a touching social message.
MS Bhasker delivers a solid act as the patriarch, loving, dutiful and quirky. The scenes with his family, daughters and wife are both funny and yet heart-touching. His role in the film leads, to a key turning point.
Vela Ramamoorthy is every inch the dignified MP with a heart of gold while Sendrayan delivers a chilling act as the rowdy manipulator with evil intentions.
While the director deserves kudos for choosing a subject like this, and highlighting the travails of a marginalized community who deserve better, the way the screenplay juggles between comedy and serious situations slows down the considerable impact and flow of the issues it deals with.
The first half brings out well, the build up and background of the characters, and establishes a connect with them, which helps in the second half. But those portions take up too much time with comedy, song and dance and could have been trimmed to get to the real issues that the film focusses on quite well in the second half.
Where the film film scores is in way it realistically brings out the struggles of the community and makes you feel for them in many well written scenes that stay in memory. The power of the vote and a way forward to bring changes for the better is also well brought out. The well written dialogues highlighting various issues also deserve mention. The period setting of the 90s is also well picturised with good camerawork, music, set and sound design. The various artists like Deepa, Manobala, Chaams and others also add to the entertainment factor. The costumes and overall look of the people also bring a touch of authenticity. Yogi Babu at the centre of it all, delivers a top-notch and laudable performance, adding greatly to the impact of the film.
Overall, a film made in a heartfelt manner, bringing to the fore significant issues of marginalised people, narrated in an engaging and impactful manner, with a stellar cast.
