Movie Review : Ramayana (part 1)

Director Nitesh Tiwari's  Ramayana hit screen worldwide in several languages including Tamil, which is the language we watched it in.

The film features the renowned story of Lord Rama ( Ranbir Kapoor),  the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu, his birth, his life  journey till the time he went on the 14 year exile with mata Sita ( Sai Pallavi) and younger brother Lakshmana ( Ravi Dubey).

The film begins with the story of Ravana ( Yash ) his rise as King of Lanka, conquering many worlds till the time his path crosses with Lord Rama when he abducts Sita from the forest.

What happens after that has been left for part 2 of the film.

The film  set on a gigantic canvas, captures the viewer's attention right from the word go, when it's starts with the rise of Ravana.  Several scenes stand out,  be it the war with Indra (Kunal Kapoor), the years of penance to win Brahma's boon, his ruling of Lanka, his conversations with his mother ( Shobana) and more.  Yash steals the show with his impeccable performance, superb expressions and measured body language. Even in the later scenes with Surpanakha ( Rakul Preet) and her husband ( Vivek Oberoi), the moments of his inner tussle with his ten selves ( Dasanana) is a tremendously powerful and enthralling performance, superbly conceptualised and executed.

Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama displays the perfect regal demeanour and body language, and  exudes a quiet serenity that captivates. Sai Pallavi as Sita shines in a measured performance. Arun Govil as Dashrath, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi and Rakul Preet as Surpanakha also stand out in memory for their nuanced and credible performances.

The camerawork and outstanding VFX give an international feel to the film while the sound design department deserves special kudos as does the perfect lip synch ( thanks to AI) to the well written Tamil dialogues, which give you an immersive experience. The bgm is resounding and resplendant.

The film leaves you with memories, of several incredible scenes like the Ravana -Jatayu fight mid air on the Pushpak Vimana, the emotiinal and very impactful dialogue between Jatayu and Lord Rama and Lakshmana as he describes what he saw,  the scene when Parasurama and Lord Rama meet, Lord Rama and Lakshmana's killing of demons in the forest and the scenes of Sita's swayamvara, their wedding and later the emotional scenes when King Dashratha is heartbroken when his son is exiled.

There is drama in the film but the tones are subdued.

The film travels a long journey and many a time the required emotional intensity in certain places seems to be missing.  But the film makes up for it in the overall superb making and the magnetic pull which despite certain places where things seem quiet and slow, the  195 minutes runtime never weighs on you.  One's curiosity is piqued and interest held firmly by the screenplay, narration and terrific making. The film leaves you with an eagerness for part 2.

Watch out for the end credit portions.
