Movie Review: Pogum Idam Vega Thooramilla

Essaki ( Pawan) and Sankarapandian (pAadukulam Naren)  are stepbrothers, both are at loggerheads and adamant to do the last rites of their father Narayanaperumal in their native village

The ambulance driver Kumar (Vemal) is in charge of transporting his dead body to his village in Tirunelveli. His wife ( Mary Rickets) is pregnant and in hospital and he needs the money for the delivery. On the way,  he gives a lift to a theatre artiste Nalinamurthy (Karunas). Kumar doesnt like him but decides to give the lift as he needs him to push the old van which keeps stopping at regularly intervals.

But on the way, due to a series of events,  things go haywire and finally Kumar discovers to his utter shock  someone has stolen the corpse from the van.

With two warring families awaiting their father , what happens next? Does Kumar retrieve the body?

The film is an interesting cat and mouse game that is engagingly narrated for the most part.

The portions in the mortuary van which are suppposed to be funny, aren't really so most if the time   But the sudden action and drama portions are thrillingly showcased.

The film has an interesting knot and storyline and though the first half is kind of slow, the movie picks up speed in the second half.

However the film keeps shifing  gears between dark humor and high drama so often that it takes away from the suspense factor.

However, the rural setting adds a touch of reality with the well chosen talented supporting cast adding credibility to the ethos.

Karunas steals the show with his act as the simple hearted theatre artist and shines in the comedy scenes with an emotional touch.

Vemal as usual handles his role with a gravitas befitting his character, of the helpless man caught up in the hands of  fate.

The cat and mouse game between the characters is gripping.

Watch out for a touching climax and a subtle message.

Overall, an interesting storyline, engaging screenplay, a mix of humor, emotions, family sentiment and drama, the film makes for an engaging watch.
