Movie Review: Second Case of Seetharam
The film, a sequel to its predecessor of 2021, is set in a small rural town, where Seetharam ( Vijay Raghavendra) is deluged by a series of gruseome murders. The pressure to catch the serial killer is mounting day by day, and no real clues are in hand.
But not one to give up, Seetharam digs deeper and deeper and many layers emerge, some of which strike close to home. To divulge details would only serve as spoilers, taking away from the thrill of this investigative cop story.
With many lives in danger, what does Seetharam do? Does he find the killer?
The film is a slow burn cop thriller, written with passionate detailing by the director. What stands out apart from the rivetting content, is the high emotional quotient of the film, which successfully draws in the viewer and not just holds his attention till the end, but also make him feel for the characters. This quality is one of the major reasons the film works big time.
The screenplay ambles along at its own pace, which reflects in a way the slow pace of life in the village. But just as you settle down, there are moments of sudden highs that not only jolt you but also set your mind racing and grey cells working.
The dialogues are few but meaningful and impactful. The Tamil version dubbing is excellent, never making you feel its a Kannada film.
The emotions are universal, the acting is superb, the action scenes are electrifying (especially the climax) and the music by Navaneeth Sham is mesmerizing. Another major highlight is the camerawork by Hemanth Acharya, whose use of lighting, angles, color palette and visuals ( jungles, village life) are brilliant. The editing is good and the crisp run time is a big plus.
Vijay Raghavendra as Seethram is simply superb. His minutest facial expressions, and his eyes convey a lot. His body language and gestures does not convey swagger but instead conveys a deep thinking human being who battles againsts odds to achieve his goal.
The supporting cast is well chosen and the thrilling elements are chilling.
The non-linear narration keeps up the suspense. There is a family angle to the story which the director conveys in a more subtle way.
The keyword of this movie is subtlety, which shows up all over director Devi Prasad Shetty film, which is a refreshing element in a thriller.
On the flip side, the killings are too gory to watch and may cause you to flinch
Overall, The Second Case of Seetharam is a neatly made, gripping, investigative cop thriller well worth a watch for lovers of the genre. The dubbing in various languages for this Kannada film, seems a sound move. The film will leave you rooting for Seetharam's next !
