Movie Review: Breakfast

Lakshmi and her husband (Krithik Mohan) can't stop fighting. A few months into the marriage they file for divorce. At the court appointed counsellor's (Kasturi) office, seeing their constant fights  she tells them the story of a couple who had a love marriage.

Shanthnu ( Raanav)  is hired to work by Janvi (Rosmin) in her dad's ( Sampath) business and they fall in love. Against her dad's wishes, after sending him to jail, she decides to marry Shanthnu.

But after a good start, things turns sour between them with daily fights and even violence. Somehow they have a baby but they still dont patch up.

What happens to the baby? Who is Lakshmi in reality? What happens to both the couples, past and present?

The movie has good production values and both love stories are engagingly narrated. The first story aptly builds up the suspense leading up to the second.

The narration is evenly paced and doesnt waste much time to get to the crux, which is the  misunderstandings and differences between the married couple and how their egos destroy their lives.

The actors deliver neat performances and Kasturi conveys maturity with her measured performance. Sampath too adds value with his presence. Rosmin steps into Tamil from Mollywood, proving her mettle in a lengthy role while Raanav makes for the perfect foil with a noteworthy debut.

The film has several twists. Watch out for the  unexpected climax.

However, the film has an overdose of melodrama in many scenes and the one too many slapping scenes get too much to watch. The drama could have been cut down and the way situations are stretched out get a tad tedious to watch.

However  it looks like the director aims at revealing the other side of marriage and  the stark social realities that can overtake life and slowly squeeze out love in a marriage, justifying its title ( Break - Fast) And overall, the film succeeds in conveying its message in an engaging manner.
