Movie Review: Dark

The story revolves around a young man, ( Ajay Karthik) working as an assistant director who searches for accomodation in Chennai, nearer to his office.

As luck would have it, he lands up in a haunted house, owned by Karunakaran ( K Bhagyaraj) where he undergoes a series of attacks and daunting experiences which even lead to a death.

Balachander ( Natty) is the cop in charge of the investigation.

What does he uncover about the strange goings on?

The psycological horror written by Dada director Ganesh Babu and directed by debutant Kalyan has an interesting storyline, narrated in a novel and engaging manner, which keep up the suspense till the end.

The music and bgm by Manu Ramesan is not loud, obtrusive or jarring as is the usual fare in such films, which is a plus. The bgm takes the lead only where necessary allowing gaps of silence.

The camerawork is solid and so is the casting. The film featuring Bhagyaraj after his demise is leaves you emotional. Anchana Nethrun as his daughter does a neat, nuanced job while Ajay Karthik makes an impact with his performance, shiwcasing his acting chops in all the transformations he undergoes.

The film may seem to meander in parts and repetitive sometimes. It does leave you with queations as well.

But the makers have tried something different and succeed in drawing attention, and in keeping up the suspense till the end. The film takes its own unhurried time to unravel and also has a social message. Overall, a rivetting ride for lovers of the genre.
