Movie Review : Drones
Three college friends, Kishore aka Kish( Dravid Selvam), Dash ( RJ Deepak) and Rush( Anjali Nair) take up free lodgings at the house of a scientist Padmanabhan ( Kuraishi) who carries out various experiments in an odd ball house. He imposes a condition that they cannot leave the premises and food will be delivered to them via a drone he invented.
Thanks to the drone camera, one day, Kishore finds a beautiful girl Prakruthi ( Siddhi Idnani) and falls in love. Somehow he escapes out of the house and meets Prakruthi, thanks to his buddy Rush, who strives to unite him to his love, despite being in love with him herself.
But all is not what it seems and to his horror, Kishore discovers a terrifying secret behind Prakruthi and her mysterious grandmother (Devadharshini) who is actually a witch, who will do anything to stop the lovers from uniting.
What is the reason for this? What is the secret behind the Beauty and the Witch? Who are the duo in reality ? Does Kishore ever unite with his love ? What happens to the secret love of Rush for Kishore?
The film by director Mirdath, is a mix of comedy, horror, emotions and fantasy, in equal measure, all designed to awaken the child in you and enjoy the magic and fantasy unfolding on screen.
Basically set in two houses, the director with his solid art department, has managed to create two different worlds, one with odd ball architecture, secret tunnels, doors on ceilings and the like, and the other, with minature buildings, hanging dolls and a dilapidated state that gives a haunted feel. Without resorting to vfx gimmicry, the film manages to convey the fantasy feel, complete with wormholes, people trapped inside miniature buildings, dolls which come to life from 6000 years ago, a witch which turn into a beauty at will, a dancing psycho, a house with secret tunnels and no escape routes and many more of such elements that keep you engaged and entertained.
Dravid Selvam makes a neat debut as hero, getting right into the skin of the character, while RJ Deepak comes into his own especially in the second half. Anjali Nair as Rush gets a meaty role she digs into, shining even more in the climax portions. Kuraishi as the scientist gets pretty real and his scenes vying for love of Siddhi are a hoot to watch. Siddhi Idnani aptly fits into her role, which she delivers with ease, delivering an impressive climax in her portions with Devadharshini ( to say more would reveal spoilers). For the ace performer Devadharshini this is a very different role from any of her others and she digs into it with fervour, and is a highlight of the film. Sathish Cinemawala as the senior cop looking for a bride, has a lengthy role which he balances perfectly, laced with humoer, effortlessly getting into the character, shining even more towards the climax.
The film takes time to establish the characters and their stories in the first half, and this may require patience to watch, as Mirdath introduces each new facet. Soon one gets accustomed to the fantasy elements and sits back to let the magic unfold.
In the sceond half, things get speeded up and all factors and facets of the story come together towards an extended but most engaging and gripping climax, which also gives a strong and relevant social message on true beauty and the infinite power of love, with some very touching performances by the cast, tying up various loose ends neatly and showcasing the tender core and aim of the film, which deserves kudos.
On the flip side, while kids will enjoy wide-eyed, whats unfolding on screen, adults may need patience in various places, to let imagination take over and drop disbelief, before settling into the story.
Overall, Drones, touching upon various concepts from science, humanoid AI dolls and astrophysics to curses, witches, teenage emotions and truly eternal love, with oodles to humor, dashes of emotions, lots of fantasy, packaged with impressive performances of a well chosen cast, is a clean, entertaing and novel watch for the entire family.
