Movie Review: Sigma

The much awaited Sigma, directed by Jason Sanjay in his cinematic debut, has hit the screens.

A gangster, Kotlapadi Veeraya Reddy ( Sampath) on the advice of  a henchman, Ezhil, decides  to set up several  gambling dens in order to increase sales of his illicit drug business.

Vincent ( Shiv Pandit) runs an underground gambling den and Ezhil approaches him with the idea,  which works out successfully for both parties.

But complications occur when Ezhil  disappers with the key to Reddy's vault along and a secret pen drive detailing Vincent's illicit operations.

Guru ( Sundeep Kishan) runs a library and is deep in debt despite efforts to  promote reading via an audiobook  You Tube channel. When looking for a female voice He meets RJ Sam (Faria Abdullah) who helps him in his enterprise which gives him hope to repay the loan to escape  the loan shark.

In a series of circumstamstances, Guru lands up in possession of Ezhil's key  to Reddy's vault and the pendrive, which in a desperate measure,  he then uses to blackmail Vincent for money to pay off the loan.

But this only lands him in the cross -hairs of the deadly Reddy.

Does Guru manage to get the money and pay off the loan? Is he able to save his home and his loved ones? Or does the powerful don get the better of him?

Sundeep Kushan shoulders the film with a  sincere performance, nailing the role of a gentle soul trying to save the dream of a mother he loved, but caught up in a tough situation of debt, not of his own making.  He brings an earnestness to the role of the underdog navigating a formidable enemy. But there is a lightness in the way he handles things,  loves his bestie, no matter how he spoils the best laid plans and cares for the library enough to do anything to save it.

Faria Abdullah as the RJ brings in a freshness by her presence. There is romance, told via a beautifully shot song, but also humor and chaos and misunderstandings between them,  all of which add layers to the relationship. She plays a ' key' role in an important part of the story. Like Guru, she too needs to make some money to save her father's antique business.

Dr Neil ( Raju Sundaram)  Guru's older friend and mentor adds to the period flavour of the film thanks to his old car.

Benjamin M has his, work cut out for him,  replicating an old house, a gambling den, a giant vault in a  mysterious location and the focal point, the key to the vault itself, and he does a good job of it all.

Thaman's score  moves with the setting and theme of the story and is different from him usual. The peppy Sigma track is an energetic number in his signature style.

The  well -designed stunt chorepgraphy in the elevator parking keeps you rivetted. The ckimax scenes in the vault area area also engaging where a host of  characters come together.  The scenes in the moving fan and at the carnival add to the suspense.

Shiv Pandit as Vincent, stands out, looking every inch the part with the right physique, body language and expressions.

Sampath makes his presence felt in his typical manner while Anbu Thasan as Guru's friend adds to the lighter moments on screen.

On the flip side, the film could could have done with some trimming  making it for crisper viewing. The visuals could have been a tad brighter. Despite the plethora of characters each giving his or her best,  the film seems to lack momentum and seems to slow down at places.

Overall, for a debut  directorial, Sigma is a neatly put together, engaging heist drama, with comedy, romance, suspense and humor, making for an engaging entertainer.
