  The much awaited Vijay starrer, Vamshi Paidipally's directorial, Varisu hit the screens for Pongal, on 11th January today. A tale of sibling rivalry, a father -son story and the importance of family relationships at its core, Varisu has Thalapathy Vijay at his stylish and charismatic best as he plays the prodigal son who returns to the family to save his father's name and bring back the erring brothers into the family fold and keep  his family united and strong. When Vijay (Vijay) shuns his dictatorial tycoon dad  Rajendran ( Sarathkumar in a solid performance) and leaves the family, only to return when his father falls terminally ill, all hell breaks loose as his brothers (Shrikanth and Shaam) resent him being declared the varisu ( heir) to their father's fortune. What happens next? The storyline is a familiar one but what holds it all together is Vijay's charisma and charm as he dances his way through, throwing in both punches...

Ajith Kumar's much awaited, H Vinoth directorial, Thunivu,produced by Boney Kapoor, hit theatres for Pongal 2023 on 11th January. When a cop makes a plan to rob a bank via a team, the robbers get a shock when they discover the presence of another bank robber already inside before them. He is Dark Devil (Ajith Kumar) who is aided from outside by Kamini (Manju Warrier). He has much bigger plans than just robbing 500 crores and with his brain and brawn, forces the theives to join and help him succeed. When the commissioner of Police ( Samudrakani) takes charge of the giant heist case, he is stunned to discover the many layers that start peeling off. Dark Devil is more than what he seems and is after something much bigger. What is it that he is after and why? Does he succeed? A bank heist story with a social message  in  H Vinoth's style, Thunivu is an Ajith flick all the way. The film seeks to justify the tagline No Guts, no Glory  from the word go....

V3 starring Varu Sarathkumar directed by Amudhavanan, hit screens on Jan 6th. A young girl disappears on her way home and to their horror, her father ( Naren) is informed that she was abused and burnt. The public lauds the fact that 5 accused were killed in an encounter and justice was served.  The case goes to an investigative team headed  ex IAS ( Varalaxmi) who studies each detail of the veracity of the encounter with her team.  At the end when she  announces her judgement, what happens? The film seeks to point out flaws in society, in the political leadership and in the enforcement of the law which allows criminals to get away many a time.   The manner of portraying the ideas on screen is not for the faint hearted. Traces of  melodrama also lace few scenes.  The director makes a certain plea via the lead character which he feels may help reduce such crimes.  Varalaxmi does a good job but the screenplay doesnt offer much scope ...

Sony Liv's Story Of Things drops on the OTT platform on Jan 6th. Directed by George K Anthony, the anthology features Gautami, Bharath, Shanthnu, Ritika Singh, Aditi Balan, Joju, Vinod Kishan and others.  Each episode is of 45 minutes and the anthology will have audio in 6 languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali and Kannada. The running theme is around fantasy with psycological drama which arises when characters believe that objects too have emotions. 'Kumbaari' is an upcoming film produced by Kumaradhas under the banner Royal Enterprises.  Written and directed by Kevin Joseph, this film is centered on the friendship of young people and the love between a brother and sister.  The movie has Vijay Vishwa, Naleem Zia as the protagonists and Mahana Sanjeevi as the heroine.  Also, John Vijay, Paruthiveeran Saravanan, Chaams, Madhumitha, Senthi, Kadhal Sukumar and others have played prominent roles.
