Review: WALTER

Image
By Rinku Gupta Sibiraj starrer Walter, directed by Anbu, is about a cop in Kumbakonam, who unearths a sinister plot when babies go missing and are later found dead. A local politcian ( Bava Chelladurai) and his family ( Rythvika, Abhishek) in the meanwhile, are bent on protecting their nefarious interests. Babu ( Samudrakani ) is another politico killed in an encounter which leads to the rise of his friend ( Natty) now gunning for Walter. How are all these activities linked? How does Walter solve the mystery? Sibiraj's height and body build makes him ideal for the role of a cop and he does full justice to it. Shirin Kanchwala looks cute but doesn't have much of a role. But a meandering script that seems to move between medical thriller and crime story seems to let him down. The action scenes lack punch and are hardly gripping. Situations seem contrived many a time as do the dialogues. The heroine is just dropped off from the story at one point. The romance itself ...

Review : DHARALA PRABHU

Image
By Rinku Gupta Its no easy task to remake Vicky Donor, (a Hindi film based on sperm donation), in Tamil, fitting it in with local sensibilities. But debut director Krishna Marimuthu manages to pull it off very successfully,  aided by a superbly handpicked cast, loads of dignity and oodles of understated class. Fertility expert Dr Kannadasan ( Vivekh in a brilliant performance) is ecstatic when he runs into the perfect potential but reluctant sperm donor , Prabhu ( Harish Kalyan in a career best act). When every effort to convince him fails, things look up when a personal issue helps Prabhu take up Kannadasan's suggestion and he agrees to be the donor who would help couples fulfil their  dream of becoming parents. But when he decides to marry and his wife ( Tanya Hope in a controlled, poised and dignified performance) learns of this,  along with his mom ( Anupama perfectly cast)  and grandmother ( Sachu in a delightful act), his life begins to go haywire. What...

Review : ASURA GURU

Image
By Rinku Gupta JSB Studios' Asura Guru stars Vikram Prabhu as Shakti, a tech savvy thief who has a problem. Whenever he sees oe hears about large amounts of money, he has to fight an urge to somehow steal the money. But he doesnt spend any of, instead he stacks it in a secret room in his studio apartment. Only his friend ( played by Jagan) knows the childhood trauma that causes this kleptomania. Diya( Mahima Nambiar) is a hired , smart detective who is the only one who manages to get to this thief. The cops are hot on his trail, as are dons from whom he has stolen. What is the reason behind Shakti's behaviour? Will he get away from those on his trail? Director Rajdheep has got a goos star cast in place who do their bit earnestly. Mahima does a good job as the feisty, intelligent detective ( Rajdheep deserves credit for giving the heroine a real and unconventional job and a major contributor to the story). Vikram Prabhu does well in the emotional, and action scenes. Jagan...

Lavanya Tripathi for Atharvaa Murali’s next !

Image
By Rinku Gupta Atharvaa Murali’s new film directed by debutant Ravindra Madhava and produced by Michael Rayappan has got Lavanya Tripati onboard as the female lead. Director Ravindra Madhava says, “The pursuit of heroine for our film has been quite a long phased one. Soon after giving thecomplete sketch to the female lead character, we felt someone with charismatic, graceful look and at the same time, a powerful performer can add more value to it. She isn’t someone, who appears in a blink and miss role, but will travel throughout the film. She is matured, bold, wise and doesn’t think twice to make a decision. She is the one, who questions about the antagonist’s intention of injecting pain in others. With so many traits involved, we approached many talented actresses here, who loved the script and character but couldn’t take up due to their prior commitments. Finally, we are happy to have Lavanya Tripati onboard for this role and I’m sure her presence is going to add more values...

Review : COLLEGE KUMAR

Image
By Rinku Gupta Director Hari Santhosh's College Kumar brings back veteran actors Prabhu and Madhoo to the screen, playing husband and wife. Their college going son ( Rahul Vijay) does not as well in college as they expect, as middle class parents. One day he challenges his father that if he were to go to college, only then he would understand how difficult it is. His father takes up the challenge and starts going to college,( adding that he will one day become a CA) while the son has to now look after running the household. How both of them cope in their new roles is the story. Are they successful in completing their challenge? Prabhu as the humorous, happy go lucky dad is charming and lights up the screen as usual. Madhoo does her bit sincerely but seems to be doing an overkill in the expressions department in places. Rahul Vijay as the typical college goer is aptly cast while Priya Vadlamani makes a mark with her presence as his love interest. The peppy numbers by...

Review: DRAUPATHI

By Rinku Gupta Draupathi is directed by Pazhaya Vannaiyarpettai fame Mohan G. The story revolves around Rudra Prabhakar ( Richard) who is supposed to have murdered his wife Draupadhi and her sister in a fit of rage as an honour killing when the latter marries a boy of another community secretly. When Prabhakar is released from jail he goes to Chennai and starts selling tea at a government marriage registrar office, and one by one he starts killing an advocate and a politico. What is the reason behind his behaviour? Is he really the killer of his wife whom he loved dearly? Why does he choose a marriage registrar's office to carry out these crimes? The film is hard hitting, with a no holds barred attitude. Taking the lid of the scam of fake marriages in the state and the modus operandi, Mohan seems to have done his research. The film would serve as an eye-opener about how unscrupulous persons can exploit youngsters with dangerous consequences. The film ends also tries to...
