Quick Review: Podhu Nalam Karudhi

Image
by Rinku Gupta Director Zion debuts with this film which revolves around loan sharks and how the lives of youngsters involved with them are affected. The story showcases turf wars between loan sharks and how violence  begets violence. How 3 different  youth's lives shape up and are impacted due to thier close contact with them forms the story. Zion has chosen a talented cast who pull off the story with ease. Several characters display thier unique viewpoints and take on life and marriage. He has largely stuck to the story without deviations like comedy tracks. The production values are good. On the flip side , there are too many scenes of characters mouthing similar, angry fast -paced dialogues, which make for a tiresome watch. Karunakaran's love interest seems perenially upset with him and her irritation jars after a while. Santosh, Yog, Adith, Leesha, Arun, Anu Sithara and Ashmitha all play thier roles well. But the screenplay moves so fast that many a time, w...

Quick Review: Escape Room

Image
by Rinku Gupta Escape Room directed by Adam Robitel is a thriller about  Six adventurous strangers who travel to a mysterious building to experience the escape room -- a game where players compete to solve a series of puzzles to win $10,000. Everything starts out as seemingly innocent fun at first but soon turns into a living nightmare as the four men and two women discover each room is an ela borate trap that's part of a sadistic game of life or death. They have to figure out a way to get out alive, leading to several tense moments, near misses and self discovery along the way. Does anyone survive and if so how?  The film has its dramatic moments alright and is a good watch for lovers of this genre. The set work is excellent and makes for a variety of interesting  backgrounds for the struggling lot . Though it could be said to slightly cliched in some places. However,  w atch out for the ending and decide for yourself.

Quick Review: Mary Queen of Scots.

Image
by Rinku Gupta A rivetting saga of queen  Mary narrated in a way that brings out the person behind the historic figure we know her as. The film brings out  the trials and tribulations she faced  as both  a queen and a woman in  an Age when prejudices of patriarchy were the norm. Quick Review : Sagaa

Image
by Rinku Gupta Sagaa is the story of young juvenile delinquents and thier struggle to survive and dream of a better life, despite caught up in the net of crime. The young boys playing the roles are well chosen and do thier part in an exemplary manner, bringing out thier angst, grit and vulnerability fully. The cast includes Saran, Pakoda  PandiPrithvirajan, Aayira Ravi Venkatraman, SreeRam and Kishore. The action sequences are superbly concieved and executed, especially the jail fights. A few lags like a forced romance scene and songs take away from the tension built up. A little more in depth back stories could have been given in order for us to feel more for the characters. Overall  director Murugesh deserves credit for choosing a different story and setting to showcase the bonds of friendship in a different manner. Good production values, casting, realistic  action sequences and a racy screenplay make for a good watch.

Quick Review : Sarvam Thaala Mayam

Image
by Rinku Gupta Sarvam Thaala Mayam as the title suggests is a film  about music. The story is about Peter Johnson  ( GV Prakash) the son of a mridangam artisan who has grown up watching his dad make mridangams. An avid Vijay fan himself, he suddenly discovers a passion for the instrument and a desire to become a mridang player after a chance meeting with a famous maestro and vidwan ( Nedumudi Venu in a brilliant performance ). How his dream is thwarted at every step and whether he finally gets his goal is the story. This is undoubtedly one of GV Prakash's career best roles so far. The way he has played the character bringing out his innocence, passion, frustrations , simplicity,  perseverance and emotions makes one firmly believe that nobody else could have played it better.  The casting is superbly done by director Rajiv Menon who has tried to explore the world of music and the struggles people face when trying to break barriers  enter a new world hither...
